The entrance to Cantão State Park is in the town of Caseara, located by the Araguaia River.  The access to Caseara is by car or by local bus from Tocantins’ capital city, Palmas.  The 250-km asphalt road to Caseara (TO-080) offers good driving conditions. The road cuts through native Cerrado, so drivers must pay attention not to run over animals such as armadillos, giant anteaters, deer, snakes, wolves and the eventual feline crossing the road early morning and evenings.

The Park’s main entrance is located 1 km before you reach Caseara, and a totem is well placed near the road, not to be missed.  A dirt road leads to the Visitor Center, where visitors will get information about the park and its trails and routes. There are some self-guided trails along the Cerrado, while the 7.500 kms of trails on foot or by canoe along the Amazon flooded forest (see map below) require that an expert guide accompany the groups (max 8 persons per group).   A list of authorized, trained expert guides can be obtained in the park, and the visitors must contact them directly.

CCTrekking is a local ecotourism company that offers tours in Cantão and other state parks.  This agent has an office in the main square of Caseara, or can be contacted by phone [63] 3379-1016 or email www.cctrekking.com.br.

Caseara offers simple accomodations, with ensuite bathroom, TV and air conditioning.  We suggest Pousada da Ilha* (telephone [63] 3379-1331) and Hotel Entre Rios*.  Good home cooking can be found at Restaurante Ype* (owner Marli) and in a few local restaurants at the main square and on the riverside.

Caseara can also be reached by boat from the town of Barreira do Campo, in the State of Para, located on the opposite margin of the Araguaia River.
